The Russians Are Coming: St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble Premieres at Saint Ann’s Parish on December 8th, 2019
Saint Ann’s Parish, will be hosting, for the first time ever, the St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble, for one performance only on Sunday, December 8th at 2:00pm.
Since 2003, the St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble has shared their musical gifts, warmth and humor with audiences around the globe. The group’s repertoire encompasses various musical periods and styles, from ancient Russian chants to chorals of Western European masters to modern music.
The Rev. Dr. Anita L. Schell, Provisional Priest in Charge of Saint Ann’s Parish, has known the Ensemble since 2006 when they sang at her parish in Bennington, VT. From there they followed her to her parish in Newport, RI and now they are with us here at Saint Ann’s Parish in Old Lyme.
“I have found their musicianship and vocal technique to be exemplary. If that were not enough, they are deeply spiritual individuals who are committed to sharing their Russian culture and heritage with American audiences. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Mother Anita Schell.
In addition to the concert on Sunday, the St. Petersburg Ensemble will sing with the Saint Ann’s Choir at the 10:30 am Eucharist Service, and at noon will offer a Master Singing Class at Saint Ann’s Church and all are welcome.
Led by Kiril Sokolov, the glorious a cappella voices of St. Petersburg Men's Ensemble will present "Credo, the Masterpieces of World Classic Choral Sacred Music and Traditional Russian Folk Songs". The Ensemble’s concerts reflect their culture and heritage with a balanced of sacred songs by Russian composers and Russian folk songs.
Since one of the tasks of the ensemble is popularization of preeminently Russian music, their program allows them to most fully explain and introduce the audience to Russian folk songs, secular and ecclesiastical compositions, as well as modern composers and transpositions of popular melodies.
The St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble, which includes the talents of Kiril Sokolov, Sergey Shapinsky, Vadim Smanster, and Andrei Volikov, has been performing in churches and concert halls throughout the world for the past 16 years. The members of the group bring extensive training and experience to the ensemble as they attended the Glinka Choir School and the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
The doors will open at 1:30 pm on Sunday, Dec. 8th and space will be limited. Parking is adjacent to the church and is free.
Suggested at will donation of $20 per person/Seniors and Students $10 per person.
All are welcome at the Reception to follow immediately after the concert in the Griswold Room. Meet the artists at the Reception and purchase one of their CDs to share this exquisite music at home over the holidays.
